Markus Vetsch (born September 21, 1759 in Grabs , baptized with the short name Marx; † December 19, 1813 in Grabs) was a Werdenberg freedom fighter in the revolutionary year of 1798 from the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland .

biography

Markus Vetsch (also: Marcus Vetsch, or the short form of the first name: Marx Vetsch) was a tailor , doctor , veterinarian and agronomist in Grabs . In the year of the French Revolution in 1798 he was the head of the successful freedom movement in the Glarner Landvogtei Werdenberg. In spring, one of the many Werdenberg freedom trees was planted in front of his house in Grabs .

The people's tribune and publicist held the following public offices: judge , governor of the 53-day republic of Werdenberg (March 20 to May 11, 1798), member of the Helvetian Grand Council, member of the Helvetian assembly as a member of the Canton of Glarus (1801), administrator in Canton Linth (1801 to 1803), justice of the peace, canton council and school council president of the municipality of Grabs. At the request of Heinrich Zschokke , Markus Vetsch was accepted into the Literary Society of the Canton of Lucerne on March 4, 1799. From April 1799 he published the newspaper “Vaterlandsfreund” in conjunction with Senator Tobler in Zurich . Markus Vetsch was also in close friendship with Frédéric-César de La Harpe and Peter Ochs von Basel .

Markus Vetsch's religious career took its course from Pietism through the Enlightenment to a liberal view of Christianity . In matters of faith he maintained a lively exchange of ideas with the Protestant-Reformed pastor Johann Konrad Schindler, 1740-1811, from Gretschins in Wartau .

The doctor Markus Vetsch kept a circle in his seal. As transmitted orally, these circles was considered at the time as a surgical instrument for operation of cataract .
