Marta Heflin

Marta Heflin (* 29. March 1945 in Washington as Marta Heflin Michelle ; † 18th September 2013 in Manhattan ) was an American comedienne and actress with character roles in film, television and theater. She became internationally known for her roles in the cinema productions A Star Is Born , A Perfect Couple , Come Back, Jimmy Dean and King of Comedy .

life and career

Marta Michelle Heflin was born in Washington in 1945. Her father Martin Heflin was a public relations manager and her mother Julia was a journalist and theater director. Due to her mother's love for the stage, Marta Heflin turned to acting at an early age. Her breakthrough as a serious actress came in 1967 when she was allowed to step in in the stage version of the musical Brigadoon for actress Karen Morrow, who has since suffered from pneumonia , and was able to shine as an actress in the prominent role of Soubrette Meg without a trial period.

In 1976 she made her feature film debut in the cinema as an actress in a supporting role in Frank Pierson's musical film A Star Is Born in the actor ensemble around Barbra Streisand , Kris Kristofferson and Gary Busey . Two years later she was cast by director Robert Altman in his romantic drama A Wedding in a supporting role. Enthusiastic about her strong presence, he then gave Altman the female lead of Sheila Shea in his 1979 film A Perfect Couple alongside fellow actor Paul Dooley .

In 1980, Marta Heflin turned briefly to television and was seen in a small guest role in the Auschwitz drama with Vanessa Redgrave Playing for Time by the directors Daniel Mann and Joseph Sargent . In 1981 she played a small role in Jonathan Kaplan's The Gentleman Bandit .

Robert Altman then re-cast her as actress in his award-winning drama Come Back in 1982 , Jimmy Dean alongside Sandy Dennis , Kathy Bates , Karen Black and Cher . In the same year she starred under the direction of Martin Scorsese in the comedy King of Comedy with the cast Robert De Niro , Jerry Lewis and Diahnne Abbott .

In her long career as an actress, Marta Heflin has also appeared in a variety of stage plays, including on Broadway . She had important roles in Fiddler on the Roof , Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar . In addition, she often played as a versatile cabaret artist in well-known nightclubs in New York City.

She died after a long illness on September 18, 2013 at the age of 68 in Manhattan.

Marta Heflin was the niece of Oscar-winning actor Van Heflin . Her relatives included the director Jonathan Kaplan as a cousin and her uncle the film composer Sol Kaplan .
