The Martin Luther Church (before 1968: St. Johannes Church) is a Protestant parish church in the old center of the municipality of Trittau , in the Schleswig-Holstein district of Stormarn .

history

The oldest evidence of a church in Trittau comes from February 10, 1239. At that time, the Hamburg cathedral provost Bruno assigned both the Reinbek church and the church built by Reinbek in Trittau to the Reinbek monastery . In 1248 the Trittauer chapel, which until then was the parish Steinbek belonged to independently as a church of the newly formed Trittauer parish. In 1329 the chapel belonging to this parish in Lütjensee became independent and later fell back to Trittau. The existence of a chapel in Klein-Trittau is guaranteed from the same year.

In 1620 the Trittau church received an organ for the first time, but it was damaged during the Thirty Years' War in 1627. Another five new organs followed in the years 1636 to 2016. The Trittau Church has undergone several renovations over the centuries up to the very recent times. After decades of repairs, a new building was planned at the beginning of the 19th century. Due to a lack of funds, the ship was only partially rebuilt. The choir and the sacristy on the north side of the church were then torn down. The old stone masonry on the north side was preserved. It is believed that this masonry still comes from the previous building, a chapel. This north wall was rebuilt in the 1950s and reinforced with a concrete wall. In 1888, today's tower with a height of 45 meters was attached to the ship according to a design by Otto Pieper. In 1911 a new choir followed a design by Fernando Lorenzen . The community hall attached to the side was built in 1935 according to plans by Hans and Otto Schnittger.

Church and community are now part of the church district Hamburg-east of North Church . The Martin Luther Church is a listed building and is included in the list of cultural monuments in Trittau .

Furnishing

Interior

The interior of the Martin Luther Church in Trittau was designed by the Lauenburg architect Carl August Wilhelm Lohmeyer in 1880. The furnishings are to be regarded as a testament to high-quality sacred architecture. The interior consists of squat pointed arches and a series of motifs. This style is a feature of English Tudor Gothic , which was used more frequently as a model in Germany in the 19th century. The offering box dates from 1783, making it the oldest piece of furniture. The baptismal font from 1736 is older, but was in the attic for many decades.

The three choir windows were a foundation of the Adolf Wickel family, Grönwohldhof, for the new building of the choir. They were made according to original designs by the art institute for glass painting of the Prof. Linnemann brothers in Frankfurt / Main, which furnished the then newly built Reichstag. The middle window shows a figure of Christ based on Thorvaldsen's figure of Christ, the coats of arms of Holstein and Stormarn can be seen in the two side windows . The windows are under monument protection. The restored Art Nouveau grave of the Wickel family is located in the cemetery north of the church.

The oil painting "Entombment of Christ" hangs on the north wall of the nave. It is a copy of the original painted by Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1789–1869), which is in Lübeck's Marienkirche . It was made by the Trittau artist Dorothea Meins and donated by her to the church in memory of those who died in the First World War .

organ

The previous organ from 1964, built by the master organ builder Detlef Kleuker , showed increasing technical deficiencies, so that the parish decided to build a new organ. After the contract was awarded in January 2014, the new organ was inaugurated on October 2, 2016. It was built by the organ building company Weimbs from Hellenthal in the Eifel. The instrument has 20  registers ( slider drawer ) on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical. The organ contains a total of 1164 pipes , of which 939 are metal, 83 are wooden and 142 are reed pipes.

Peal

The ringing of the Martin Luther Church consists of four bronze bells. One of these dates back to 1833, from the Beseler foundry in Rendsburg , the other three from the new cast bell from 1957. During the First World War, a bell had to be delivered, which was replaced in 1925 by a bell from the Ohlson foundry in Lübeck . This had to be handed in in 1940. On December 1, 1957, the new bell was handed over to the community.
