Martin Helmchen

Martin Helmchen (* 1982 in Berlin ) is a German pianist .

Life

At the age of six, Helmchen received his first piano lessons, from 1990 with Corinna Simon . He completed piano studies at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin under Galina Iwanzowa and, from 2001, at the Hanover University of Music and Theater with Arie Vardi ; further mentors are William Grant Naboré and Alfred Brendel . In 2001 he won the International Clara Haskil Piano Competition . In 2003 he won the international Kissinger Piano Olympics competition . In 2006 he was awarded the Crédit Suisse Award , u. a. for his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev with Schumann's piano concerto as part of the Lucerne Festival . In the same year he received the ECHO Klassik Prize as “Young Artist of the Year” together with the cellist Danjulo Ishizaka for their CD with works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , César Franck and Benjamin Britten .

He has given concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , the Orchester de Paris , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Academy of St Martin in the Fields , the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the Cleveland Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra . His focus is on chamber music, where he makes music with Heinrich Schiff and Marie-Elisabeth Hecker . Further partners are Gidon Kremer , Christian Tetzlaff , Sharon Kam , Tabea Zimmermann , Juliane Banse , Julia Fischer , Sabine Meyer and Lars Vogt .

In the 2014/2015 season, Martin Helmchen makes his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnanyi . He is also artist in residence with the Dresden Philharmonic under Michael Sanderling .

As part of the exclusive contract with PentaTone Classics, the first CD with piano concertos by Mozart was released in 2007 , the first solo CD with works by Schubert in autumn 2008. 2009 brought two more CDs: With the Orchester Philharmonique de Strasbourg: Robert Schumann, piano concerto A minor op.54 and Antonín Dvořák , Piano Concerto in G minor op.33 and together with Sharon Kam and Gustav Rivinius , Johannes Brahms , Two Sonatas for Clarinet and Piano op.120 and Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Violoncello Op.114. Since then, PentaTone Classics has released further recordings by Helmchen, including the complete works by Schubert for violin and piano (with Julia Fischer ) and the piano concertos op. 25 and 40 by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

Martin Helmchen has been Associate Professor of Chamber Music at Kronberg Academy since 2010 .

In 2019 he was awarded a scholarship at the Villa Massimo in Rome

Martin Helmchen is married to the cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker and has three daughters.

Reviews

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote in 2012: “Strikers and pushers with sensitive sides; impressive how much depth his bright, soft piano has ”. In a 2013 review for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Helmchen was “the philosopher at the piano, with his little love for the punch line”.
