Martin Hoff

Martin Hoff (born June 2, 1965 in Ballenstedt ; † August 27, 2016 ) was a German conductor and Kapellmeister .

Hoff studied conducting, piano and accompaniment with Hartmut Haenchen and Siegfried Kurz at the "Carl Maria von Weber" University of Music in Dresden . He received his first engagement as a solo instructor at the Halle Opera House in the last year of his studies.

He then worked in Halle as a director of studies and music director. Between 1997 and 2004 Hoff was first conductor and general music director at the Meiningen Theater , where he conducted Der Rosenkavalier , The Flying Dutchman , Tristan and Isolde , Die Zauberflöte , Sly, Die Fledermaus , Rigoletto and Cavalleria rusticana / Der Bajazzo , among others . In 2004 Hoff was appointed to the German National Theater and Staatskapelle Weimar as the first Kapellmeister . There he directed the performances of The Bartered Bride , Fidelio , Salome, The Flying Dutchman, The Marriage of Figaro , Don Carlo, Carmen, Nabucco , Idomeneo , The Abduction from the Seraglio , Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk , The Magic Flute and Luisa Miller . Hoff contributed to the musical development of the Weimar production of the Ring des Nibelungen and conducted Das Rheingold , Die Walküre , Siegfried and Götterdämmerung . Hoff also conducted two concerts by the Staatskapelle Weimar on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller's death with the 9th Symphony.

Hoff has worked regularly with the Thuringian Chamber Orchestra Weimar since 2004. After concerts in Weimar and Schmalkalden, two CDs with works by Johann Nepomuk Hummel were released in the 2004/2005 season . Other recordings included the Singspiel Erwin and Elmire by Grand Duchess Anna Amalia and the performance of the clarinet concerto KV 622 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by the klezmer clarinetist Helmut Eisel . In 2015 he performed the oratorio “The Triumph of Death” by Frederic Rzewski in Weimar, based on the protocols of the Auschwitz trials.

Hoff was guest conductor at the Komische Oper in Berlin as well as in Nuremberg, Dessau, Brandenburg, Zwickau, Ulm and at the Schwetzingen Festival .

As a song accompanist, Hoff gave recitals in Dresden, Leipzig, Halle, Weimar and Paris. In 1989 he was honored with the accompaniment prize at the “International Hans Pfitzner Lied Competition” in Hamburg.

Since 2011 Hoff has taught conducting at the Liszt School of Music Weimar .

Hoff died unexpectedly on August 27, 2016 at the age of 51.
