Martin Lehnert left an extensive artistic work behind. In addition to painting, graphic works, and in particular the monotype , have taken up a large part of his work . But works in oil , tempera , watercolor , pastel , poster paint and charcoal drawings are also represented.

He was artistically influenced by the Dresden School, the work of Bernhard Kretzschmar and Paul Wilhelm, but also elements of New Objectivity , Expressionism and Surrealism found their way into his visual world. Earlier still lifes are inspired by the spirit of Morandi . In other works one finds echoes of the fairytale-like representation and coloring of Chagall .

“And yet these stylistic references can by no means have a clarifying effect. Martin Lehnert's artistic handwriting preserves its independence outside of the usual classifications. The image statements themselves are full of social allusions. Relationship to one another plays a major role. He reflects on youth and old age, dreams up poetic constellations, observes and questions behavior and stereotypes in coded form. The titles give the viewer the keys to the metaphorical picture narration. Martin Lehnert's art thrives on narrative details that have a moralizing effect without being didactic and losing their poetic radiance. In spite of visionary rigor, there is always a subliminal tendency towards harmonious balance. "
