Life

Mall was a son of the armorer Matthias Mall. After his father died early, his mother Maria first took care of his education. There it was shown that he was suitable for further studies. In 1779 he was accepted into the seminary of the Benediktbeuern monastery . From there he was sent at the expense of the monastery to the University of Salzburg , where he obtained his master's degree in philosophy in 1787 .

He then returned to the Benediktbeuern monastery, where he was accepted as a novice with the religious name Sebastian. His profession took place on October 26, 1788, and he was ordained priest on September 24, 1791 in Benediktbeuern. On October 9, 1791, the monastery sent him again to the Salzburg University, where he studied Oriental languages and Biblical exegesis . He then received a professorship for dogmatics, biblical exegesis and oriental languages in Benediktbeuern . In addition, he regularly helped out in the parish of Kochel am See .

Mall received - after his lectures became known beyond the monastery - on April 19, 1801 a call to the University of Landshut , where he received the chair for oriental languages and exegesis. In addition, in 1801 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty ( Dr. theol. Hc ) and an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Landshut ( Dr. phil. Hc ). In the academic year 1802/1803 he held the office of dean of the theological faculty.
