Martine Marie Roero de Cortanze (born August 4, 1945 in Boulogne-Billancourt ) is a former French rally , enduro and powerboat driver as well as a journalist and author .

Motorsport

Martine de Cortanze began rallying in 1968 and took part in the French cross-country rally championship for five seasons until 1972.

However, she enjoyed a spontaneous ride through the forest on her boyfriend's motorcycle that she began to take driving lessons on two wheels. Visiting an enduro event with friends finally aroused her enthusiasm for this sport. She bought her own motorcycle and began taking part in enduro races, where she was often the only woman in the field. And although she was often laughed at by her male competitors at the beginning, her performance increased steadily.

Between 1975 and 1979 she took part in five seasons of the French Enduro Championship and five editions of the Enduro du Touquet . 1978 and 1979 she participated in various motorcycle rallies in France and won at the of Thierry Sabine launched Croisière Verte , a drive across France from Le Touqet to the Mediterranean coast , in these two years, respectively ranked first in the category of ladies .

When Thierry Sabine, with whom she was friends at the time, was planning the first edition of the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1978 , she decided to take part. Another acquaintance, who was racing director at Honda , then accepted her into his team. Martine de Cortanze, on a Honda 250 XLS, was the fastest woman to finish in 19th place overall. In 1980 she took part on a Yamaha XT 500 but did not make it to Dakar. In 1981 she reached 19th place in the motorcycle rankings on a Yamaha XT 250 , but Christine Martin won the Coupe des Dames , who finished in 10th place.

From 1981 to 1984 she again took part in numerous endurance races and rallies with automobiles . In 1981 she was the fastest woman in the Mauléon 24-hour race and the second fastest in the Tunisia rally that year. At the 1983 Rallye du Maroc, she won the women's class in automobiles.

After she had been able to watch racing motorboats training on the Seine , she finally decided to try it out too. From 1984 to 1988 she took part in this sport for five seasons, both on rivers and at sea ( offshore ).

In 1979 Martine de Cortanze, who had started her professional career as a journalist and press officer, wrote the book Une fille dans le désert (“A girl in the desert”) about her participation in the Paris-Dakar rally. In 1982 she was also the co-author of Les Raids, a book about marathon rallies .

From 1985 to 1988 she worked as an automobile journalist for the magazine Maisons et Jardins and then until 1996 as the promotions and communications director of the National Olympic Committee of France .

In 1988, she took along with the French astronaut Patrick Baudry of parabolic flight tests of NASA in part. She has been the holder of the Ordre national du Mérite since 2001 .

Private

Martine de Cortanze was born in Boulogne-Billancourt as the daughter of Hervé and Caroline Magny and attended schools in Paris and Neuilly-sur-Seine . In 1972 she married Christian Roero de Cortanze, from whom she has since divorced.
