Mat Kearney ([cɑːniː]; born December 1, 1978 in Eugene , Oregon ) is an American songwriter and singer .

Career

Mat Kearney is from Oregon in the northwestern United States. After finishing school at South Eugene High School, he began studying literature at California State University in Chico . It was only during his college days there that he discovered his talent for writing lyrics and songs. After the third year he took a break to make recordings of his own songs with his friend, record producer Robert Marvin in Nashville . When he got promising offers from record companies, he decided to venture into a music career instead of continuing his studies.

The label Inpop Records , he signed a recording contract and released his debut album in 2004 Bullet . After his mix of hip-hop and folk had not yet brought the hoped-for success, he focused more on guitar pop on his second album, Nothing Left to Lose , which he released on Columbia . He was able to accommodate three of his songs in the television series Grey's Anatomy and thus increase his popularity. His songs were also used again and again in other series such as Kyle XY , Laguna Beach or Scrubs - The Beginners . The breakthrough came in 2006 with the title song. The song rose to number 41 in the US singles charts . He also got his first gold record for it . The album also hit the official charts and reached number 4 on the Christian Albums ( Christian pop music ).

It was three years before the third album City of Black & White . This brought Kearney to number 13 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Christian albums, even if Closer to Love was only a minor hit. He also went on tour with Keane, among others . The move to Universal followed . Another 2011 tour with Owl City coincided with the release of the album Young Love . With number 4 in the official charts, it was his most successful album to date and reached number 1 not only on Christian albums but also on rock albums. With Ships in the Night , it contained another single hit that was awarded gold. His song Sooner or Later was also the soundtrack for the Google Zeitgeist video 2011.

This was followed by a longer break. In 2014, Mat Kearney wrote Coming Home , a hometown song, for the Oregon Ducks , his hometown football team. The following year he also played it in a promotional video for the Oregon State Lottery. In the spring of 2015, a new album followed with the title Just Kids , in which he thematically incorporated his youth in Oregon. It could not repeat the success of its predecessor, but brought it to number 1 on the Christian charts for the third time. Several songs on the album also made it into the Christian songs charts.
