Mattawa is a city ( City ) in Grant County in the State of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Mattawa had 4,437 residents. An estimated 4,500-6,500 people live in Mattawa during the heyday of the (fruit) harvest, which drops to about 2,000 outside these times.

history

The town of Mattawa was originally parceled out by E. and Eva Campbell in 1909, but was not recognized as a town at the time. With the construction of the nearby Priest Rapids Dam and Wanapum Power Plant , the city experienced a boom as a home for construction workers. Mattawa was officially recognized as a city on June 3, 1958. The Port of Mattawa , an area with several industrial sites, was also established in 1958. Mattawa has the first library in the United States to be built as a straw bale . On December 3, 2009, the City of Mattawa became a so-called "non-charter code city", a city in Washington state with maximum local control under the constitution and the laws of the state.

As of the 2010 census , Mattawa had 4,437 residents, 791 households, and 725 families. The population density was 2315 per km ². There were 843 housing units at an average density of 439.8 per km².

The population consisted of 45% white , 0.9% Afro-American , 1.1% Indian , 0.1% Asian , 49.7% other "races" and 3.4% two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 95.7% of the population.

Of the 791 households, 82.8% had children under the age of 18, 70.7% were run by married couples living together , 10.6% by single mothers and 10.4% by single fathers; 8.3% were non-families. 2.3% of the households were singles and 0.6% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 5.61 and the average family size was 5.28.

The median age in the city was 22 years. 42% of the population were under 18, 14.3% between 18 and 24, 33.1% between 25 and 44, 8.7% between 45 and 64 and 1.8 65 years or older. 55.7% of the population were men and 44.3% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , Mattawa had 2,609 residents, 495 households, and 438 families. The population density was 2055.8 per km ². There were 576 housing units at a mean density of 453.9 per km².

The population consisted of 29.59% white , 0.19% African American , 0.54% Indian , 0.92% Asian , 65.85% other "races" and 2.91 % % from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 89.8% of the population.

Of the 495 households, 66.7% had children under the age of 18, 64.2% were run by married couples living together , 10.7% by single mothers; 11.5% were non-families. 5.5% of the households were singles and 2% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 5.27 and the average family size was 4.79 people.

The median age in the city was 22 years. 38.1% of the population were under 18, 20.4% between 18 and 24, 32.4% between 25 and 44, 7.6% between 45 and 64 and 1.5 65 years or older. There were 151.8 men for every 100 women, and 179.2 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 31,964 and that of families was US $ 25,921. Men had a median income of US $ 13,669 versus US $ 13,333 for women. The per capita income was US $ 7,510. About 30.6% of families and 34.4% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 38% of those under 18 and 42.6% of those over 65.
