Matthew Parrish

Matthew Parrish (born October 14, 1969 in Fresno ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , arrangement , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Parrish grew up in a music-loving family; his father played the double bass early in his military career. In middle school he began playing the trumpet before switching to the double bass with Carolyn Davis, Larry Ridley and Charles Fambrough shortly before applying to study at Rutgers University . After graduation, he moved to Philadelphia, where he soon played at Ortlieb's Jazz House with Mickey Roker and Shirley Scott . The trio accompanied musicians such as Cecil Payne , Johnny Coles and Sylvia Syms . The first recordings were made in 1995 when he played in the trio of pianist Orrin Evans ( Deja Vu ). In the following years he worked mostly in Pennsylvania , u. a. with Bobby Durham , Ron Carter and Byron Landham . He also toured internationally with Al Gray and performed with veterans such as Clark Terry , Marian McPartland , Dr. Lonnie Smith , Lou Donaldson , Joe Cohn , Savion Glover and Bill Charlap . He was part of the bands of Greg Osby , Jon Jang , Stefon Harris , James Newton and Regina Carter ( I'll Be Seeing You - A Sentimental Journey , Verve).

In 2002 Parrish released the album Circles under his own name , which he recorded with tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm , pianist Vincent Bourgeyx and drummer Steve Hass and which was highly praised in Allmusic . In addition to his own compositions, he played arrangements of Victor Feldman's “Seven Steps to Heaven”, Duke Ellington's “Flirtibird” and the traditional “ Go Tell It on the Mountain ”.

Recordings were made in Pennsylvania with Ruth Naomi Floyd, John David Simon, David Leonhardt, Ben Schachter and Michelle Lordi, and from the 2000s in New York City continued with Anthony E. Nelson and Houston Person ( Rain or Shine , 2017). Currently (2019) he is also a member of the Chip White Dedications Sextet. Parrish has been involved in more than 60 recordings, including with Wynton Marsalis , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Paquito D'Rivera , Clark Terry, Etta Jones , James Williams , Harry Sweets Edison , James Newton, Miri Ben-Ari , Gary Thomas , Vana Greedy, Orrin Evans and Karine Aguiar. Parrish teaches at Princeton University .
