Matthias Pöschl

Matthias Pöschl (born September 3, 1924 in Landshut ; † July 20, 2007 in Munich ) was a Catholic priest and poet.

Life

Matthias Pöschl grew up as the eldest son of a traveling merchant in Landshut. After attending elementary school, he became a pupil of the Sankt Fidelis seminar in Regensburg in 1936 . Due to the war, Pöschl moved to the Burghausen and Landshut grammar schools . In February 1943 he was called up for military service . After being wounded and taken prisoner by France , he studied philosophy, theology and art history at the Freising seminary from 1947 . His first Mass celebrated Matthias Pöschl on 22 May 1952 in the St. Martin church in Landshut. After five years as a pastor in Prien and Munich, he was appointed religious teacher at various secondary schools in Munich. Most recently he worked at the municipal Carl-Spitzweg-Realschule in Munich-Untermenzing. Matthias Pöschl then retired in 1985 as senior teacher . He lived and worked in the parish of St. Martin in Munich- Untermenzing until a serious illness in 2001 forced him to retire. He succumbed to the disease in 2007. His grave is in the cemetery at St. Martin's Church in the Untermenzing district of Munich.

As a poet, Matthias Pöschl is one of the well-known representatives of Catholic literature of the 20th century in Bavaria. His work, which was created between 1962 and 2004, comprises 11 biographies, mainly of German and French saints, 7 books with Bavarian dialect poems, including 2 books with 70 poems on pictures by Carl Spitzweg, 7 volumes of poetry in written German, 8 plays in Bavarian dialect, 5 plays in written German and 2 volumes with religious writings.
