Marian apparition

Notre-Dame de La Salette

On September 19, 1846 at three in the afternoon, the Virgin Mary appeared to the two shepherd children Mélanie Calvat (15 years) and Maximin Giraud (11 years) in clear weather on a mountain near the hamlet . The "beautiful lady", as the young people called her, is said to have wept with grief.

On the fifth anniversary, this traditional event was recognized as an apparition of Mary by the Catholic Church. Another year later, in 1852, the Bishop of Grenoble suggested building a church at the place of apparition. It was consecrated in 1861 and completed in 1865. The church was given the rank of minor basilica in 1879 . The three-aisled, neo-Romanesque basilica has two massive towers. Inside, the nave is bordered by two rows of Byzantine columns that support a vaulted ceiling. In the apse there is a mosaic depicting Christ. The transept has three medallions depicting the weeping, the message and the departure of the Madonna. There is also a small museum dedicated to the history of La Salette in the basilica. The scenes of the apparition of Mary are depicted with three life-size bronze groups at places of apparition.
