Matthias Warnig

Artur Matthias Warnig (born July 26, 1955 in Altdöbern ( Niederlausitz )) is a German manager who plays an important role in German-Russian economic relations through his previous work in the Ministry for State Security of the GDR and his contacts in Russia. After reunification he became chairman of the supervisory board of Dresdner Kleinwort , an investment subsidiary of Dresdner Bank , whose business in Russia he built up and managed; Most recently he was on the management board of Nord Stream AG and is still represented on a number of supervisory boards.

Warnig is considered a close confidante of Vladimir Putin .

Life

From 1974 to 1990 Warnig worked for the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the GDR. He was last in the rank of captain Deputy Head of Unit 5 of espionage department XV of the Stasi headquarters in Berlin. One of his main tasks was the "economic intelligence in the context of the overall problems of the head office intelligence " (HVA). First he was deployed in East Berlin, where he had the code name "Economist". From 1986 to 1989 Warnig then worked under the code name "Arthur" as a so-called officer in special operations (OibE) in Düsseldorf, he worked as camouflage in the GDR trade mission. After the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution had targeted Warnig as a potential spy, he was ordered back to East Berlin prematurely in August 1989. His future employer, the Dresdner Bank, is said to have been among the objects of his espionage activity at the time.

Under the government of Prime Minister Hans Modrow ( SED ), Warnig was from November 1989 advisor to the Minister for Economic Affairs, Christa Luft (also SED). He took part in the negotiations on monetary, economic and social union for the GDR . There he met the CEO of Dresdner Bank, Wolfgang Röller , who made him a job offer. From May 20, 1990, Warnig was employed by Dresdner Bank. Since 1991 he has been working on behalf of the bank in Saint Petersburg . Warnig was chairman of the board of the investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort until 2006 .

Warnig has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Bank Rossija since 2003 . He also has a seat on the supervisory body of Bank VTB , the second largest credit institution in Russia. Warnig also has several mandates in corporations in the Russian raw materials industry: on the supervisory board of Rosneft , the world's largest energy company, and of Transneft , the Russian oil pipeline company. At the aluminum manufacturer RUSAL , Warnig chairs the supervisory board. For Gazprom Warnig represents the interests of the supervisory board of the Leipzig-based gas company Verbundnetz Gas AG true and took over AG from 2011 to 2015 as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gazprom Switzerland. From March 2006 to July, Warnig was Managing Director of Nord Stream AG .

Warnig and Putin met in January 1989 at the latest when they attended the celebrations for the 71st anniversary of the Cheka . They have been friends since 1991 at the latest. When Putin's wife Lyudmila Alexandrovna Putina had a life-threatening accident in 1993 , according to media reports, Warnig made sure that she could be operated on in Germany.

Warnig is married to a Russian woman with whom he has a son. The family lives in Staufen im Breisgau . He has a son and a daughter from his first marriage. Warnig is the owner of a real estate and asset company, MW Invest GmbH & Co. KG .

Awards

On October 7, 1989, Erich Mielke gave Warnig the “ Gold Medal for Loyal Service in the National People's Army ”. In October 2012 he was awarded the Russian Order of Honor by Putin .
