Max-Josef Ibel (born January 2, 1896 in Munich , † March 19, 1981 in Rheinbach ) was a German officer , most recently a brigadier general in the air force of the Bundeswehr .

Promotions

First World War

Ibel joined the 1st Bavarian Pioneer Battalion on July 5, 1915 as a flag junior . At the beginning of March 1916 he switched to the 3rd Field Engineer Battalion of the 1st Bavarian Army Corps as a company officer and platoon leader . There he remained until the end of April 1918. On April 30, 1918, he was transferred to the 1st Pioneer Replacement Battalion , where he was assigned to the Guard Reserve Pioneer Regiment ( flame thrower ). Ibel remained in this regiment beyond the end of the war until its demobilization on February 25, 1919.

Interwar years

After a leave of absence lasting several months, which lasted from February 26 to May 5, 1919, Ibel was taken over by the Reichswehr and assigned to the 1st Pioneer Battalion in Munich . There he was promoted to adjutant in mid-July 1919 and stayed there until the end of March 1920. He then joined the 1st company of Reichswehr Battalion 21 as platoon leader , which he left at the end of September 1920. He then switched to the 7th (Bavarian) Pioneer Battalion as a company officer. On November 6, 1922, Ibel was assigned to the 19th (Bavarian) Infantry Regiment . He stayed there only a few days. As early as November 25, 1922, Ibel was again assigned to the 7th (Bavarian) Pioneer Battalion, where he was retired from military service at the end of July 1928, in order to then undergo an unofficial civilian training course abroad from August 1928 to September 1931 . In October 1931 Ibel returned to Germany and was reactivated for the army, where he was reassigned as a company commander to the 7th (Bavarian) Pioneer Battalion. He stayed there until March 1934.

Air force deployment and World War II

On April 1, 1934, Ibel joined the Luftwaffe , which was being secretly set up , where he initially worked as a teacher at the Schleißheim fighter pilot school until February 1935 . He was then posted to Berlin , where he worked from March 1935 to mid-May 1936 as a consultant for pilots at the inspection of flying schools. On May 15, 1936, he was assigned to the Dortmund Air Force , a forerunner of the later Fighter Wing 134 , in whose construction Ibel played a key role. Ibel completed his extension of the pilot's license at the blind flight school in Celle from October to November 1936. In December 1936 Ibel rose to the rank of squadron captain of the I. Group in the Fighter Wing 232 in Bernburg . He held this position until February 1937. He then acted as commander of Group I in Jagdgeschwader 135 until October 1938 . Here he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 1, 1938 . On November 1, 1938, Ibel was promoted to commodore of Jagdgeschwader 231 , which he headed until the end of September 1939.

During the Second World War Ibel was entrusted on September 27, 1939 with the construction of the Jagdgeschwader 27 , which he led in the Western campaign and in the Battle of Britain . On October 12, 1940, he gave up the management of the squadron and moved to Fürth as commander of Fighter Pilot School 4 . With the beginning of the Eastern campaign , Ibel was appointed Fighter Pilot 3 in June 1941 , and on December 1, 1942, he was appointed Higher Fighter Pilot West . He stayed in the latter until mid-September 1943. Subsequently, temporarily without a command, he was transferred to the Führerreserve for the rest of the month . On October 1, 1943, he took over as commander of the 2nd Hunting Division , which he then led until the end of 1944. It was here that he was promoted to major general on January 1, 1944 . From January 1 to mid-February 1945, Ibel was reassigned to the Führerreserve, and on February 16, 1945, Ibel was appointed stage manager for radiation deployment to the agent for radiation deployment, where he remained until the end of the war. On May 5, 1945 he was taken prisoner by the British , from which he was released on March 4, 1948.

Post war career

After the founding of the Bundeswehr , Ibel joined the Air Force on October 1, 1957, while being appointed Brigadier General, and served there as commander of the 1st Air Defense Division until his retirement . He was retired on September 30, 1961.
