Max Bentele (born July 25, 1825 in Lindenberg im Allgäu ; † March 9, 1893 there ; also Maximilian Bentele ) was a German history and church painter ( referred to as a decorative painter in the imperial era ).

Youth and education

Max Bentele grew up as the son of the carpenter and joiner Josef Bentele and his wife Karoline on a small farm in Lindenberg-Raisach. The artistically gifted father had attended a drawing school in Munich in his youth and in this way also supported his eager and eager son, whom he taught drawing skills before reading and writing. Later, his primary school teacher and the Simmerberg salt factor continued Max Bentele's drawing training.

After successful additional Latin lessons, he was able to begin studying at the Polytechnic School in Munich as early as 1841 - at the age of 16 . A year later (1842) he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he studied for a total of eight years; initially with Clemens Zimmermann and then with Heinrich Heß , and Julius Schnorr as well as with Joseph Schlotthauer and Moritz von Schwind .

While Moritz von Schwind's artistic imagination fascinated him, he felt personally and artistically drawn to the Oberstdorf painter Johann Schraudolph , who also worked at the Munich Academy . After the death of Bentele's parents, this mentor took on the role of a surrogate father. King Ludwig I rewarded Bentele's achievements (drawings, sketches, nudes, drapery studies) with several grants.

Under the direction of Johann von Schraudolph (1850-1852) he painted seven frescoes in the Speyer Cathedral . On behalf of Schraudolph and based on his designs, the frescoes in the churches of Bruchsal and Baden-Baden were created in 1855–1856.
