Max Birnstiel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max L. Birnstiel (born July 12, 1933 in Bahia , Brazil ; † November 15, 2014 in Männedorf near Zurich ) was a Swiss molecular biologist and founding director of the Vienna Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP).

Life

Max L. Birnstiel attended the canton school in Zurich from 1945 to 1951 . From 1952 to 1959 he studied physical chemistry and botany at the ETH Zurich , where he received his doctorate with his dissertation on the redox potential of living and dying plant tissue (tobacco browning) .

From 1960 to 1963 he worked as a post-doctoral student at the Department of Biology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena (California) ( USA ) with James Bonner . From 1963 he was a lecturer ( lecturer ) at the University of Edinburgh , in 1972, he moved to the Institute of Molecular Biology of the University of Zurich , where he was until 1986 a professor and head of the institute.

From 1986 to 1996 he was director of the newly founded Vienna Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP).

In 1997 he and his colleagues founded Intercell AG as a spin-off of the IMP, where he worked until 2002. In 2017 the Max Birnstiel Foundation was founded, which is dedicated to promoting young scientists in molecular biology. Together with the IMP, the foundation established the “Birnstiel Award” for doctoral students in the molecular life sciences in 2019.
