Max Gutkind

Max Gutkind (born November 25 or November 26, 1847 in Seesen ; † December 17 or December 27, 1931 in Braunschweig ) was a German banker , councilor and major .

Life

The son of the lottery taker Levi Gutkind from Frielendorf in Hesse and his wife Elise, b. Bremer, completed an apprenticeship at the Braunschweig bank NS Nathalion Nachf., Where he subsequently worked as an authorized signatory. He took part in the Franco-German War in 1870/71. In 1879 he founded the banking house M. Gutkind & Co., which was located at Brabandtstrasse 8. In 1883 he was involved in founding the shares sugar factory in Twülpstedt , of which he chaired the supervisory board. He was a member of the supervisory board of the Braunschweig-Hannoversche Hypothekenbankand other Braunschweig industrial companies. He was also a member of the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce and the District and Reich Railway Council. Gutkind was president of the Braunschweiger Landwehrverband, which he co-founded on July 11, 1875 . He was the district head of the city's poor administration and a member of several charitable organizations. Gutkind was one of the most important Jewish citizens of the city and was the recipient of high honors. During the First World War he organized the military service as a major in Braunschweig. His bank went bankrupt in October 1931 as a result of the Great Depression. Gutkind died a short time later in December 1931. He was buried as a converted Christian in the main cemetery in Braunschweig . He bequeathed 10,000 Reichsmarks each to the Jewish community of Braunschweig and the Protestant St. Magni community.

family

Gutkind was with Fanny, geb. Hertz (1850–1927), married. She headed the Elisabeth Association, was the holder of the Braunschweig War Merit Cross for women and the Red Cross Medal III. Class. Both son Walter Gutkind (1880–1976) was a lawyer and in 1938 emigrated with his family to Great Britain.

Trivia

Gutkind described a reception at the former Chancellor Bismarck as the highlight of his life in 1893, who honored Gutkind's military service in the Franco-German War.
