Max Takuira Matthew Mariu SM CNZM (born August 12, 1952 in Taumarunui , † December 12, 2005 in Hamilton ) was a New Zealand religious and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Hamilton in New Zealand .

Life

Max Takuira Matthew Mariu attended school in Waihi Village and Hato Paora College in Feilding . Then Mariu joined the religious community of the Marist Fathers and made profession in 1976 . After studying philosophy and Catholic theology at the Marist Seminary in Green Meadows , he received the sacrament of ordination on April 30, 1977 from the Auxiliary Bishop in Auckland , Edward Russell Gaines .

After his ordination, Max Takuira Matthew Mariu worked as a pastor in Napier , Whangarei and Pakipaki . He also taught at Hato Paora College in Feilding from 1980 to 1982 .

On January 30, 1988 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Decoriana and Auxiliary Bishop of Hamilton in New Zealand. The Bishop of Hamilton and Military Bishop of New Zealand , Edward Russell Gaines, gave him on 19 March of the same year, the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Wellington , Thomas Stafford Cardinal Williams , and the Bishop of Tonga , Patelisio Punou-Ki-Hihifo Finau SM.

Max Takuira Matthew Mariu was the first Māori to be ordained a Roman Catholic bishop. In 2002 he became Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
