Max Thomas Zentawer (born December 13, 1962 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German jazz musician ( guitar , composition ).

Career

Zentawer grew up in Neuss after his family moved a few times. After graduating from high school, Zentawer studied German and philosophy at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . During this time he took lessons from the American jazz guitarist John D. Thomas. Workshop and short study stays followed. a. at the Banff Center (Canada) and Siena Jazz (Italy) with Mick Goodrick , Robin Eubanks , Kenny Wheeler , Reggie Workman , Enrico Rava and Anthony Braxton .

Numerous engagements in the Düsseldorf and Cologne live and studio scenes as well as various musical and theater music productions and tours with his own jazz and fusion ensembles through Germany, Italy and Switzerland took him to Freiburg im Breisgau in the mid-1990s, where he became a member of the F. -Orkestra was. Here Zentawer worked as a lecturer for jazz guitar, ensemble playing and history of popular music at the Macromedia University and the Freiburg Jazz & Rock Schools . During this time further collaborations u. a. with Axel Fischbacher , Tom Lorenz , Walfried Böcker , Christoph Spendel , Niki Reiser and David Klein .

Zentawer has headed the Freiburg Guitar Institute since 2014. In addition, he gives guitar workshops and specialist didactics seminars, is the author of several teaching works for guitar and gives concerts internationally with his own trio and the German-Swiss trio Saudade Nova . There was also collaboration with trumpeter Gary Barone and guitarist John Stowell, as well as touring with guitarist and producer Friedemann Witecka .
