history

On January 18, 1855, the Mescalero Apaches killed Captain Henry W. Stanton and many soldiers of his company on the Rio Penasco, a memorial plaque in the village commemorates this.

The settlement began in 1873 with Albert M. Coe (born Jan 28, 1846 - May 16, 1912), whose brother Frank had fought with Billy the Kid in the Lincoln County Cattle War. He built the later Jim Mahill Ranch on the Rio Penasco , one of whose log cabins still exists today. As a result, further pioneers settled here from 1878. In 1881 Albert Coe married his childhood sweetheart Mary Mahill (1862-1953) from his former home in Missouri . Their parents, John and Sara Mahill, moved in with them a year later and bought the land around what is now the village square for $ 300 from John James, who settled here in 1879 and was the namesake of James Canyon . The house you built is still owned by the family today.

The first post office opened in 1885 under the name Upper Penasco with Mary Coe as postmaster. In 1904 the post office and with it the village was officially referred to as Mayhill. This was presumably a spelling mistake by the postal authority of the name Mahill. Attempts to correct the mistake were unsuccessful.
