Milestone (Gossa; Chausseestrasse 31)

Prussian milestone in Gossa

The milestone at Chausseestrasse 31 in Gossa in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt is one of two hexagonal milestones in the village. Although both have been in their current locations for decades, only the distance stone at Chausseestrasse 19 was known to begin with. The milestone at Chausseestrasse 31 had simply grown over and did not reappear until 2006. As the street name suggests, both stones are on the Prussian Chaussee Berlin - Kassel (today Bundesstraße 100 ), which was built between 1821 and 1823.

Since all known hexagonal milestones (such as those in Landsberg , Roitzsch or Bitterfeld ) have the same edge length and shape and these are limited to the Halle - Wittenberg and Berlin chaussee section , i.e. they do not occur anywhere else, it is obvious on the one hand that they were built at the same time, Although they now have different inscriptions, on the other hand it is likely that they were erected during the construction of the road.

Due to its secondary location next to Chausseehaus Gossa and the no longer recognizable inscription, one can only speculate about the original location of the stone. According to the owner, the stone had been standing on the Chausseehaus for half a century. With the conversion of the milestones to the kilometer system in the 1870s, this stone was probably superfluous and therefore brought to the Chausseehaus and forgotten until it was rediscovered in 2006 during renovation work. A corresponding map entry on the historical Mes table sheet 4240 (2389) Graefenhainichen makes it probable that the stone was originally located south of Graefenhainichen . The exact background must still be considered unclear for the time being, as different scenarios are conceivable.

It also remains unclear whether there were also quarter and half milestones here - between the former whole milestones that have been preserved, because this has so far only been proven for Halle. In the monument list the distance stone is with the detection number 094 18759 as a monument listed.
