The grumpy pensioner Olaf Hintz has been sitting in a wheelchair since a stroke and lives with his sister Elfie in a large apartment. Elfie takes care of her brother as best she can, but when she wants to go on a cruise with her new acquaintance, she tries to find suitable care for Olaf. She gets to know the lively Trixie via an online portal. She should take care of her brother and can therefore live rent-free in her part of the apartment. Hintz is not at all enthusiastic about it, and certainly not that the young woman is moving in with three children. He strictly refuses to let her into the apartment, but Trixi lives up to her name and tricked the old man. Before he knows it, the four of them are sitting at the kitchen table. Trixi tries very hard to please the old man, but Hintz is very stubborn. As a former teacher, he not only criticizes the choice of words of his new tenants, but also Trixi's educational measures.

The next day, when Trixi is at work and the children are at school, Hintz takes all the luggage out of the apartment and has a new lock installed. He looks forward to the homecoming of his lodgers with satisfaction, but that is not what he expected. While the four of them are still standing a bit perplexed in the stairwell, the police suddenly ring the doorbell at Hintze's door. A neighbor reported him because Hintz had scratched the paint on his car a few days ago. Trixi cleverly exploits the situation and pushes her way back into the apartment with the children. To Hintze's amazement, she immediately eloquently sided with him and defended him against the officials, who then let the matter rest. Even if Hintz is still not enthusiastic about his new roommates, a kind of truce now sets in. While listening at the door, he learns that Trixi obviously cannot read or write because her daughter Afia has to read the mail to her. Hintz had already wondered why Trixi only has mini jobs and no regular work. It takes some persuasion to convince Trixi that with a proper education she would have completely different options and that her financial bottleneck could be ended. Trixi, however, thinks her life is ok - the way it is.

It turns out that Trixi's oldest son, Murat, has been skipping school for a long time. That same evening Hintz caught the boy trying to steal various valuables from the apartment. As a result, he asks Trixi to move out with her children immediately. When she wants to say goodbye to Hintz with the children and packed suitcases, Hintz only makes a few demands and lets the four continue to live with him. He wants Trixi to register for a course to learn to read and write; From now on Murat should go to school regularly again and do his homework under his supervision. Trixi is delighted and even gets Hintz to take over her "training". Murat's problems at school stem from the fact that he got involved with drug dealers and now owes them money. Since Hintz gradually recognizes Murat's good sides, he wants to help him. First of all, he gets him to confide in his mother, who is now trying to get the necessary money with even more work. But the offers are exhausted and so Trixie only sees the solution to prostitution. Hintz finds out and is horrified. There is another argument. After a period of separation and reflection, Hintz invites Trixie back to her home. He realized that he too made mistakes. Out of gratitude, he not only pays Murat's debts to the dealers, but also asks Trixi to move in with him again.
