My friend the dolphin 2 (Original title: Dolphin Tale 2 ) is an American drama film directed by Charles Martin Smith , who also wrote the screenplay. It is the sequel to My Friend the Dolphin from 2011. The film was released in the United States on September 12, 2014; in Germany only on October 9, 2014.

A few years have passed since the young Sawyer Nelson and the team at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, led by Dr. Clay Haskett, Winter rescued the young dolphin who lost its tail fin after getting caught in a crab trap. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who designed a tail fin prosthesis especially for winter, the team saved the dolphin, whereupon Winter saved the aquarium from bankruptcy, as soon all the tourists wanted to visit the brave dolphin lady. The CMA was able to invest in its project with the motto "to save injured animals, to rehabilitate them and, if possible, to make them wild again".

However, their fighting is not over yet. Winter's foster mother, the adult dolphin Panama, dies, causing Winter to cut off contact with everyone, even her best friend, Sawyer. However, Panama's sudden death has further negative effects on the CMA. The USDA threatens Clay to take winter out of the aquarium as the law states that dolphins must be kept in pairs. If the team does not find a female companion, the CMA will lose its money-making Dolphin Winter.

Charles Martin Smith's script is largely based on real events that took place at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater , Florida . The film was shot on location from October 7, 2013 to January 11, 2014.

My friend, the Dolphin 2 has had positive reviews so far. The film achieved a rating of 71% on the film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes (as of September 12, 2014), on Metacritic 58 out of 100 points.

“Without stepping into the typical traps of an endeavored Hollywood sequel, Charles Martin Smith maneuvers his likeable cast and the no-frills story beautifully photographed through a classic family adventure that is fun and heartfelt. There are deductions for this in the B grade: The intrusive guest appearance by surfer Bethany Hamilton and the few, but all the more unsuccessful CGI effects disturb the overall picture, mainly because the film would have done without them. What a shame!"
