The convicted Tommy works illegally as a porter at the train station. There he carries the two crooks Oscar and Theo, who have just been released from prison, two suitcases to the hotel that they had previously stolen from the artist Lola. Oscar and Theo's accomplice, the young Harry, turns up at the hotel, but he thinks Tommy is another accomplice and tells him that the three of them are planning to rob a bank. When they discover that Tommy is only the porter, they try to save the situation by trying to make Tommy understand that it was all just a joke. Tommy, however, has understood the plan and is now trying to convict the three of them together with a good friend, the retired police officer Berg, in order to then collect the reward.
Meanwhile, the three criminals are planning the break-in. Tommy, who pretends that he wants to join in, pays a visit to the apartment, which is above the counter of the savings bank and belongs to two absent Africa researchers, in order to rent it for the break-in. The present servant Gippner could use the money, but only wants to rent it to women. For this reason Oscar, Theo and Tommy use the clothes from Lola's suitcase to dress up as women and move into the apartment.
On the evening when Oscar, Theo and Harry wanted to break through to the bank, the owners of the apartment came home completely inconvenient. After initial difficulties, they are enthusiastic about the female lodgers, whereupon the disguised Tommy has to go out with them so that the others can go downstairs in peace. They tie up Gippner and hang up a true-to-the-original photograph of the counter room that Harry, who pretended to be an architect, made earlier. Now they penetrate into the counter and break into the safe, which goes on with many difficulties and numerous minor accidents.
In the meantime, Tommy and his two companions have to have fun in a bar. Lola happens to appear in it, who recognizes her stolen clothes on Tommy and calls the police. When this arrives at the researcher's apartment, Oscar, Harry and Theo try to flee together with the stolen money, whereupon Tommy and Berg lure them to the nearest police station.
At the end of the day, Tommy is still the hero of the day and makes his new girlfriend Helga happy too.
