Melchior Gottlieb Minor (also: Maleki ; * December 28, 1693 in Zülzendorf ; † September 24, 1748 in Gutschdorf ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Minor came from a family of Silesian pastors who originally came from Bohemia and actually bore the name Maleki. His great-grandfather Thomas Maleki had settled in Breslau as a wine distiller. His grandfather Melchior, once a deacon in the Silesian region, had Latinized his surname Maleki (Slavic: "Small") in the scholarly name Minor . Three of his sons also became preachers. Among other things, the father Melchior Gottliebs, Melchior Minor († October 3, 1721), who had married Juliane Elisabeth von Netz († February 1, 1698). From that marriage came Melchior Gottlieb, who received his first lessons from his father, who had worked as a pastor in Zitzendorf, in Ekebrecht and in 1717 in Praus.

In 1703 he got a private tutor and in 1705 he attended the school of the orphanage in Halle (Saale) , where Matej Bel was his teacher. Here he laid the foundations of the Latin, Greek and Hebrew languages. In October 1709 he attended the grammar school in Zittau and began studying at the University of Wittenberg in 1712 . Here Johann Wilhelm Jahn , Johann Christoph Wichmannshausen and Georg Friedrich Schröer were his teachers. After a short time he switched to the University of Halle , where he familiarized himself with the English and French languages. He attended the lectures on natural law with Nikolaus Hieronymus Gundling and familiarized himself with canon law with Justus Henning Böhmer . At the University of Jena , he continued his studies with Michael Förtsch (1654-1724), Johann Franz Buddeus and Jesaias Friedrich Weißenborn (1673-1750). With Johann Friedrich Wucherer (1682–1737) he heard ethics and homiletics , with Georg Albrecht Hamberger (1662–1716) mathematics and with Johann Reinhard Rus (1679–1738) expanded his knowledge of Hebrew and the oriental languages.

In 1715 he had completed his studies and became court master of several noble families in Schweidnitz in his home country . Through their connections, after he had been ordained on September 12th in Liegnitz , on September 29th, 1720, he was sent to a parish in Tepplinwoda . In 1722 he went as a deacon to the Gnadenkirche in Landeshut , where he rose to senior pastor in 1727 and received his first position in the church ministry. He turned down an offer in 1734 as Pastor Primarius of the Peter and Paul Church in Görlitz and in 1739 as main preacher at the Nikolaikirche in Hamburg. Instead, he was appointed royal Prussian senior consistorial councilor of Landeshut-Bolkenhain in 1746 and inspector of churches and schools in the Schweidnitz district in 1748. He died of a heart attack on a trip to Wroclaw.

The ascetic, celebrated pulpit speaker and writer had earned an excellent reputation as a writer of theological works. In addition to various articles in journals, he has published quite a few books.

From his marriage to Anna Amalia, the daughter of the royal lawyer of the principalities of Schweidnitz and Jauer Johann Siegismund von Benisch, four daughters were born. Christiane Elisabeth Minor is known (* March 24, 1728; † January 1, 1792; married. 1751 Fischer)
