Mena Schemm-Gregory (born November 11, 1976 in Plettenberg ; † July 8, 2013 in Coimbra ) was a German paleontologist . She specialized in the study of Paleozoic and Mesozoic brachiopods .

Life

Mena Schremm Gregory studied after graduating from the St. Ursula High School in Attendorn from 1996 Geology and Paleontology and Italian (2001-2004) and Spanish and Portuguese Philology (2000-2004) at the University of Marburg .

During her studies she worked at the Senckenberg Research Institute in the field of paleozoology since 2002 . In 2004 she presented her diploma thesis on Lower Devonian spiriferids in the Rhenish Slate Mountains in Marburg .

This was seamlessly followed by a DFG- funded doctoral degree on morphology, phylogenesis , taxonomy and paleogeography of Devonian spirifers, which she completed in 2009 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . During her doctorate in 2007, she taught historical geology at the State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY New Paltz). In 2008 she worked at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University , Cambridge .

Her research focus was on brachiopod research. She is considered to be the pioneer of 3D visualization of the internal structure of Paleozoic and Mesozoic brachiopods.

After completing her doctorate, Mena Schemm-Gregory left the Senckenberg Institute and began a research stay at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama . She then was a post-doctoral student at the Universidade de Coimbra and the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Portugal .

The eight-language-speaking scientist published extensively and described numerous new species of brachiopods. Despite her short academic career, she was honored with international prizes and was herself a reviewer of recognized paleontological journals. Mena Schremm-Gregory was also a corresponding member of the international Devonian Stratigraphy Commission. Among her specialist colleagues she was considered the queen of the brachiopods .

Schemm-Gregory's scientific work was repeatedly interrupted by a metabolic disease that had appeared in her youth and of which she died on July 8, 2013.
