Menz is a formerly independent municipality in the north of the Oberhavel district in Brandenburg . It has been part of the Stechlin community since September 27, 1998 .
Menz is located between Rheinsberg and Fürstenberg / Havel directly on the Roofensee and borders the forest area of the Menzer Heide with the Großer Stechlinsee . The Stechlin nature reserve and the Fürstenberger forest and lake area reserve directly border the local area. The Brandenburg village is located in the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park in the northern part of the Oberhavel district, 80 kilometers north of Berlin.
history
Menz was first mentioned in a document in 1290. Archaeological traces, however, go back a long way to the time of Slavic settlement. On the Wallberg, 300 m west of the town on Roofensee, there was a Slavic castle wall (tower hill) with a settlement in front of it.
At the beginning of the 13th century, the knight's seat became the property of Johannis Mentiz, a retainer of the Counts of Lindow-Ruppin . The border location repeatedly exposed the market town to raids by Mecklenburg knights in the period from 1420 to 1438. In 1524 Menz came to the Mark Brandenburg as part of the Ruppin rule . In 1638 the place was cremated together with another 28 settlements by the imperial troops under General Gallas, who withdrew from the Ruppin district .
Since the 18th century, Menz has developed into one of the most prosperous official villages in the Ruppin district, benefiting from forest and lake ownership. In the second half of the 18th century, the Menzer Heide was almost completely cleared after the construction of the Polzow Canal created the basis for shipping the timber over the Havel to Berlin.
The oldest building in Menz is the Menz village church , a stone church from the 13th century that was rebuilt several times after the Thirty Years War .

Museums
The NaturParkHaus Stechlin is the visitor center of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park . It is located in the center of the village in the building of the old forest ranger's office. There is a permanent exhibition, changing events and tourism information. In the Stechlin regional workshop on a neighboring property, changing exhibitions on regional topics are shown.

A square stone building was built in 1926 as a war memorial for the fallen of the community. A commemorative plaque commemorating those who died in the First World War is attached to each of the three sides . On the fourth side there is a memorial plaque for those who died in World War II . In 1987 they were restored by Mr. J. Braun from Menz.

In the middle of the village there is a stone church that was completed in 1585. In 1772 the church tower got its present shape. The historic courtyards date from the 17th century.
Inside the church you can see the wooden barrel vault and a turning door from the 13th century. The round windows show Christ as ruler of the world .
In 2002 a single manual organ was inaugurated.
Loop around the Roofensee
There is a footpath and jogging path around the Roofensee, on which there are also several swimming areas. Information material and a backpack for the water and forest adventure trail and the moor nature trail are available in the NaturParkHaus Stechlin in Menz.
