Merkenfritz is a district of the municipality Hirzenhain in the Wetteraukreis in Hesse .

Geographical location

Merkenfritz is located in the southern Vogelsberg between the Büdinger Forest and the Oberwald am Merkenfritzbach , a left southern tributary of the Nidder near Hirzenhain. The district area is given for 1961 as 451 hectares, of which 247 hectares are forest.

Merkenfritz is located northeast of the core municipality Hirzenhain. The town centers are only about one kilometer apart. In addition to the core community, Merkenfritz is surrounded by the towns of Steinberg in the north, Gedern in the northeast and Wenings in the southeast.

history

Merkenfritz was first mentioned in a document on October 6, 1280 as Erkinfridis .

On the occasion of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Merkenfritz joined the municipality of Hirzenhain on October 1, 1971.

Merkenfritz had 462 inhabitants in 1939 and 641 inhabitants in 1961.

Transport and infrastructure

In the Merkenfritzer valley, the federal highway 275 runs as Gederner Straße through the town of Lauterbach (Hessen) and Gedern in the northeast to Ortenberg and Friedberg (Hessen) in the west. From Gederner Strasse , at the upper end of the village, state road L 3185 branches off to the north and in the local area the district road K 215 as Mühlstrasse and further as Borngasse to the southeast.

At times, up to seven mills belonged to Merkenfritz. A restaurant is now operated in the Henkelsmühle , which was built in 1680 .

In the village there is the fairy tale land Merkenfritz and a stop for the Vulkan-Express buses . The Vulkanradweg leads along the route of the former Oberwaldbahn on the outskirts.
