Mervyn Richard Wingfield, 8th Viscount Powerscourt , KP , JP ( July 16, 1880 - March 21, 1947 ) was a British peer and politician.

Life

Family origin

Wingfield was the eldest son of Mervyn Wingfield, 7th Viscount Powerscourt , from his marriage to Lady Julia Coke, daughter of Thomas Coke, 2nd Earl of Leicester . His younger brother was the future Major General Maurice Anthony Wingfield , who was head of the quarters department in the War Department between 1939 and 1941. His younger sister Olive Elizabeth Wingfield was married to William John Bates Van de Weyer, who served as a major in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment . His second youngest sister Clare Meriel Wingfield was the wife of Arthur Chichester, 4th Baron Templemore , among others, between 1940 and 1945 Parliamentary Secretary ( Government Chief Whip ) was in the upper house. His youngest sister Lilah Wingfield Katherine Julia was with Arthur Clive Morrison-Bell , of 1910 to 1931 as a deputy to the lower house ( House of Commons ) belonged and there for the Conservative Party constituency Honiton represented.

Career

After attending school Wingfield completed an officer training and was first second lieutenant in the 4th Battalion of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry , before he switched to the Irish Guards on February 16, 1901 as a second lieutenant . When his father died, Wingfield, who became a member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) on June 6, 1902, inherited his Irish nobility titles as 8th Viscount Powerscourt and 8th Baron Wingfield on June 5, 1904 , as well as his British title as 2nd baron Powerscourt , making him a member of the House of Lords for life . In the following period he acted between 1906 and 1907 as Comptroller of the Household of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , John Hamilton-Gordon, 7th Earl of Aberdeen , and temporarily as Justice of the Peace of County Dublin . After the death of William Proby, 5th Earl of Carysfort on September 4, 1909, he succeeded him as Lord Lieutenant of County Wicklow in 1910 and held this position until the establishment of the Irish Free State on December 6, 1922.

During the First World War Wingfield did military service and was temporarily deputy chief of the military police ( Assistant Provost Marshal ) of the special reserve of the Irish Guards as a captain . In 1916 he was made Knight Companion des Order of Saint Patrick (KP) and was awarded the Corix de Guerre of the Kingdom of Belgium for his military services . After the passing of the Irish Government of Ireland Act in 1920, he became a member of the House of Lords ( Senate ) of the Parliament of Southern Ireland in 1921 . Since this, like the House of Commons, was boycotted by the Irish nationalists, so that only 15 out of 61 members gathered. In contrast to the House of Commons, however, two more Senate meetings took place before it was also dissolved by the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. He then acted temporarily as chief commissioner of the Boy Scouts for the Irish Free State .

Marriage and offspring

Mervyn Wingfield married Sybil Pleydell-Bouverie on June 9, 1903, whose father Walter Pleydell-Bouverie served as a major in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment (Duke of Edinburgh's) . This marriage resulted in a daughter and two sons, including the eldest son Mervyn Patrick Wingfield , who was born as a second child and inherited his title of nobility when his father died on March 21, 1947. His sister was Doreen Julia Wright, b. Wingfield (1904-1991) who was the grandmother of Sarah Ferguson , the Duchess of York.
