The Merz School is a private, state-recognized school with a grammar school , elementary school and kindergarten . It is located on the Geroksruhe in Stuttgart and was one of the first schools in the Federal Republic to introduce non-teaching Saturday and all-day care. The so-called musical afternoon is an essential part.
history
The Merz School was founded on November 22, 1918 together with the Merz Boarding School and the Merz Academy by Senator Albrecht Leo Merz as an educational institution "Werkhaus Werkschule Merz". In 1940 it was closed due to its ideology, in 1945 the elementary school was first reopened with the approval of the American administration and from 1952 the grammar school was also reopened. After the destruction by the Second World War , the opening was only possible again with the support of the American John McCloy Cultural Foundation , when the rejection of the reopening by the local authorities could be reversed. Albrecht Leo Merz introduced his educational method to recognize and shape in all areas.
The Merz School is one of the first schools to fulfill the so-called “ Golden Plan ” in the 1960s , ie a school with its own sports field including a plastic circular track, which was converted into a more modern sports field in 2010, as well as its own sports and swimming pool .
pedagogy
Albrecht Leo Merz's educational concern was to train people who would use all of their abilities to use intellectual knowledge and creative design for life and work, that is, holistic education of young people in the scientific, artistic and technical fields. This was by no means with anti-technology intent, Albrecht Leo Merz himself was far too much of a technician.
The Merz School is characterized by special educational methods. According to the former student Nina Hoss , Rector Merz always wanted to be used.
