The Fritillaria Messanensis ( Fritillaria messanensis ) is a plant from the genus of Fritillaria in the family of Liliaceae (Liliaceae).

description

The Messina chess flower is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The leaves are linear. The bracts form a three-leaved whorl. Usually there is only one flower, rarely up to three.

The tepals are 22 to 42 millimeters long and green, have a purple-brown checkerboard pattern and a broad green central stripe. An egg-shaped to lanceolate nectar gland is located near the base of the tepals.

The flowering period extends from April to May.

The chromosome number of all subspecies is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The Messina chess flower occurs on the western and southern Balkan peninsula , on Crete , in Calabria and on Sicily . The data from Algeria and Morocco refer to Fritillaria oranensis . It can be found on pastures, in bushes and in forests at altitudes from 0 to 2000, possibly also up to 3000 meters.
