Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a computer game of the Metal Gear Solid series , that of Kojima Productions developed and Konami released was. Like its predecessors, the game is a stealth shooter and was released on March 18, 2014 for PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 and Xbox One . It continues the plot of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and is considered the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain .

action

Ground Zeroes is a direct sequel to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker . It is set in March 1975, a few months after the events in Peace Walker , in a prison camp in Guantánamo Bay , Cuba. There Big Boss, who is referred to as Snake in the game, tries to free the two children Chico and Paz from captivity by a military organization called XOF, which is led by the mysterious, scarred commander "Skull-Face".

Gameplay

The player controls Snake / Big Boss from a third-person perspective through the openly designed play area ( open world game ). The aim of the game is to free the two children, Paz and Chico, while remaining undetected and avoiding fights. To do this, guards must be bypassed or stunned, taking into account the environment and lighting conditions.

In addition to the choice between clandestine action and violent penetration, the player often has different approaches when it comes to concrete implementation. Compared to previous titles, some changes have been made to the gameplay. Instead of displaying guards with a cone of vision on a surrounding radar as before, they can be marked. The player can determine their position at any time and perceive their outlines through walls.

At around 90 minutes, the scope of the game is small compared to other series offshoots and therefore not a full-fledged title. With appropriate knowledge of the game and using the game mechanics, the game can be ended within a few minutes. After the first play through, a higher level of difficulty and five additional missions are unlocked, which are played in the same area, but set different priorities and increase the playing time. The tasks include B. the targeted deactivation of two heavily guarded people, the paralyzing of anti-aircraft guns with C4 plastic explosives or fire protection from the flying helicopter for a contact person.

Ground Zeroes is considered the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain , which is intended to demonstrate the new open-world game concept . Originally, Ground Zeroes should come out together with The Phantom Pain . Kojima cited the arrival of the new generation of consoles as the reason for the independent decoupling and to shorten the waiting time until The Phantom Pain . It is the first game in the series with an open game world and the possibility of completing missions in any order. In the game, the newly developed Fox engine was used for the first time, which, among other things, gives the game a day-night change calculated in real time. According to the company, all guards in the game were individually designed.

For Metal Gear Solid V , David Hayter , longtime voice actor for Snake / Big Boss, has been replaced by actor Kiefer Sutherland . The game's soundtrack uses, among other things, the song Here's to You by Joan Baez , a hymn to the wrongly imprisoned and executed Italian anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti . As in the previous games, the original compositions come from Harry Gregson-Williams .
