history

In 1902 the schooner yacht, designed by Archibald Cary Smith, was completed on Shooters Island near New York City . This was a break with the Emperor's British sailing tradition. The Emperor's brother, Prince Heinrich , had traveled to New York for the christening of the ship on February 25, 1902 . Godmother was Alice Roosevelt , the daughter of incumbent US President Theodore Roosevelt . This marked the beginning of the German-American sailing friendship. This is how the idea came about, in addition to the America's Cup , which was previously a matter between England and America, German-American special class races , alternately in Kiel and in Marblehead in the area of the Eastern Yacht Club , Boston . In 1906, the Roosevelt Cup and 1907 the Kaiser Wilhelm Cup were sailed.

In addition to the major German-American regattas, the Kaiser met the industrialist Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach's new yacht , the Germania , with the Meteor III in 1908 , which by far defeated the Kaiser in most races. The equipment of the third Kaiser yacht was considerably more luxurious than that of the two previous models. This Meteor had a salon, a study, a small library and elegant bedrooms. However, the Meteor had little chance of winning the big-class regattas, because it was simply closed by August Müller's interior work including piano, fireplace, complete mahogany paneling, luxurious heavy furniture, with bulkheads and a 2000 liter oil tank become difficult. In 11 regattas, the Meteor was only able to win once before Cowes in England. She didn't have a chance at Kiel Week . The Ingomar , designed by Nathanael Herreshoff from the USA, won every race with Charlie Barr as captain. Only in Germany did the Meteor win several times against the schooner yacht Hamburg , because the owners, rich Hamburg merchants, politely let the imperial yacht go first. In 1910 the yacht was sold to Carl Dietrich Harries and his wife Hertha, daughter of Werner von Siemens , and renamed Nordstern . She also took part in the Kiel Week under the new owners. After that, several changes of ownership took place. The yacht was also rebuilt several times, it received engines, radio systems and even a third mast and was later used for fishing. In 1942 the yacht was towed back to Shooters Island under the name Aledebaran . In 1948, the ship was hauled to Staten Island for US $ 2100 and broken up there.
