Michael Filz (born April 12, 1777 in Passau , † February 19, 1854 in Michaelbeuern , Land Salzburg) was a German-Austrian pedagogue, historical researcher and prior in the Benedictine Abbey of Michaelbeuern .

Life

Filz, the son of poor parents, attended high school in Passau and entered the Michaelbeuern monastery in March 1797. He took his religious vows on June 17, 1798 and was ordained a priest on March 8, 1800. In 1799 Filz began studying theology at the University of Salzburg and from 1805 was a lecturer at the Benedictine University in Salzburg . In 1811 the Benedictine University was dissolved and Filz received an employment decree as a high school professor from the royal Bavarian government. In 1817 he was appointed provisional prefect at the grammar school and in 1819 professor of general world history at the kk Lyceum in Salzburg. After Emperor Ferdinand I had assigned the Augustinian monastery in Mülln to the Benedictine monastery Michaelbeuern, Filz gave up his teaching post in 1835 and became administrator and prior of the monastery in Mülln. In 1836 the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences and in 1848 the Imperial Austrian Academy of Sciences appointed him a corresponding member. In 1842 he was appointed prior of the Michaelbeuern monastery.

Felt's most important work as a historical researcher is the “History of the Salzburg Benedictine Abbey Michaelbeuern” from 1833.

Filz received numerous honorary memberships. In 1836 the emperor awarded him the great gold medal of honor with ribbon . Michael-Filz-Gasse is named after him in the Salzburg district of Maxglan .
