Life

Michael Karl came from the noble family Althann . His parents were Michael Ferdinand, Count von Althann and Maria Eleonore Eva, née Countess Lazansky von Bukowa ( Lažanská z Bukové) . Michael Karl studied from 1718 at the Sapienza in Rome, where he received his doctorate in law in 1725. Even during his studies he had several preludes : he was archpriest of Opole and St. Gallen as well as a prelate at the Roman Curia . On May 1, 1726 he was ordained a priest and on September 20, 1728 he was appointed Archbishop of Bari .

After the death of his uncle Michael Friedrich von Althann in 1734, he was nominated as his successor to the bishopric of Waitzen . The papal confirmation came on December 2, 1735. Like his predecessor, he campaigned for the spiritual renewal of his diocese and the reconstruction of the churches as well as the settlement with Germans. He died in Vienna and was buried in the Waitzen cemetery.
