Michael Kersting (drummer)

Michael Paul Kersting (born February 5, 1954 in Rottenburg am Neckar ) is a German modern jazz drummer .

Kersting, the drumming brought self-taught at first played rock music . From 1978 he had formative experiences in jazz with musicians such as Wolfgang Dauner , Wolfgang Engstfeld , Michel Herr , Christof Lauer , Christoph Spendel and Chet Baker . After a stay in New York City in 1986 he toured Europe with Jaco Pastorius and then played with musicians such as Mal Waldron , Jimmy Woode , Kirk Lightsey , Arthur Blythe , Vanessa Rubin and Jasper van't Hof . He founded his own groups, performed with Martin Schrack , Benny Golson , Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Klaus Wagenleiter and from 1996 with Kenny Wheeler , Claus Stötter and Günter Lenz , with Terumasa Hino and Manfred Bründl (1998), with Helmut Brandt (1999 ), with Urszula Dudziak and with Randy Brecker . He recorded the album Human Spirit in a trio with Thomas Stabenow and Jim Ridl . He is also involved in recordings by Rainer Pusch and the “Südpool” project by Bernd Konrad and Herbert Joos . He has also worked with Gitte Hænning and Mario Adorf .

On the occasion of the awarding of the Jazz Prize Baden-Württemberg in 1989, the jury pointed out that, due to his stylistic versatility, he is "a central figure in the Baden-Württemberg music scene", who "uses his instrument" sensitively and with excellent technique in a wide variety of musical situations " could.
