Michael Wanner (born December 10, 1952 in Füssen ) is a former German ice hockey player .

Career

The striker Michael Wanner is the son of Otto Wanner , who was President of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) from 1964 to 1992 . Michael Wanner began his career in 1957 at EV Füssen and was part of the Bundesliga team from 1972 . In his first season 1972/73 , Wanner won the German championship with his feet. At the end of the season, Wanner moved to league rivals Berliner SC , where coach Xaver Unsinn put him in a row of strikers with national players Lorenz Funk and Ernst Köpf . With the Berliners Wanner became German champions in both the 1973/74 and 1975/76 seasons . In the 1980/81 season Wanner played for Berlin's FC Preussen in the third-tier Oberliga Nord before returning to Bundesliga club EV Füssen for the 1981/82 season.

But already during the season he switched to the upper division ESG Kassel , before Wanner joined league rivals BSC Preussen in the summer of 1982 . With the Prussians, he rose straight away to the 2nd Bundesliga, where his team was promoted to champions in the 1983/84 season , but failed in relegation to the Bundesliga. In the following season 1984/85 the championship in the 2nd Bundesliga North was followed by the failure in the Bundesliga relegation. After that, Wanner moved internally to the Prussian second team, which competed in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord. But already during the 1986/87 season he moved to Herford EG in the Regionalliga West and made promotion to the Oberliga Nord with the Ostwestfalen. In the 1987/88 season Michael Wanner acted as a player- coach and led his team to relegation.

Michael Wanner completed eleven missions in the German national team . In 1976, during a training camp in Warsaw, there was a scandal when Wanner wanted to go to a pub with Rainer Philipp and a supervisor. There, the three of them were arrested by the police without giving any reasons and sent to prison for three days . The three men were ransomed by the Federal Republic of Germany for a deposit of 10,000 marks . The then national coach Xaver Unsinn then deleted Wanner from the squad for the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . Only after the tournament did Wanner learn that national coach nonsense was only following an instruction from DEB President Otto Wanner.

After his playing career, Wanner was a coach at TuS Geretsried , SC Bietigheim-Bissingen and EC Bad Tölz . He also assisted Peter Kathan senior in the coaching team of the German women's national team in qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympics .
