Michel Decoust

Michel Decoust (born November 19, 1936 in Paris ) is a French composer , conductor and music teacher .

Life

Decoust began training as a pianist , which he interrupted at the age of fifteen to turn to architecture . He returned to music only in 1956 and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Yvonne Desportes (solfège and counterpoint), Louis Fourestier (orchestral direction ), Georges Dandelot (harmony), Olivier Messiaen (music analysis), Darius Milhaud and Jean Rivier (composition).

In 1963 he won the Grand Prix de Rome . 1964–65 he attended courses for new music with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Henri Pousseur in Cologne and for orchestral conducting with Pierre Boulez in Bâle . In 1967 Decoust composed the experimental piece Polymorphie for large orchestra, the premiere of which by the Orchester National de France in the Cathedral of Royan led to an art scandal.

Around 1970 he was one of the founders of the Orchester des Pays de la Loire , in 1972 he founded the Conservatoire de Pantin with Irène Jarsky and Martine Joste , of which he was director until 1976. In 1975 Boulez appointed him head of the pedagogical department of the IRCAM , from 1979 to 1991 he was inspector general for music lessons at the French ministry of education. After working as general inspector for music, dance and drama classes in Montpellier until 1994, he returned to the Ministry of Culture until 2001.

Decoust was u. a. Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1980) and Legion of Honor (1987) as well as Officer of the Ordre national du Mérite (1991). In 1989 he received the SACEM Composition Prize .
