Miguel Esteban Hesayne (born December 26, 1922 in Azul - † December 1, 2019 ) was an Argentine clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Viedma . He was known as a human rights activist and denounced state terrorism and human rights violations during the last Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983) .

Life

Miguel Hesayne studied philosophy and theology at the seminary of San José de La Plata and was ordained a priest on December 12, 1948 . He was initially active as a professor of literature and Latin at the seminary of Azul , whose rector he later became. During the Second Vatican Council he studied pastoral theology in Lille with Yves Congar .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Viedma on April 5, 1975 . The Bishop of Azul, Manuel Marengo , donated him episcopal ordination on June 4th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Eduardo Francisco Pironio , Bishop of Mar del Plata , and Miguel Angel Alemán Eslava SDB , Bishop of Río Gallegos . He was introduced to the office on July 8, 1975.

Along with Enrique Angelelli , Jaime de Nevares and Jorge Novak, Hesayne was one of the few Argentine bishops who openly opposed the military dictatorship and its practice of making politically unpopular people disappear . In 1985, after the return to democracy, he testified in the trial against the military juntas.

On June 28, 1995, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation. In the 1990s he became a harsh critic of the neoliberal policies of the Carlos Menem and Fernando de la Rúa governments . In 1999, he wrote an open letter to President Menem after he called the head of Caritas Argentina , Rafael Rey , a liar because of his warnings of rising poverty. In the letter, Hesayne wrote to the President: "With your political deceit you can deceive even the Pope, but not the Lord of the Church and of history, Jesus Christ, for whom only what we really did for the poor matters." Menem had Received an award from John Paul II in 1993 for his tough stance against abortion.

In 2000, Hesayne wrote another open letter to President de la Rúa. In it he expressed his opinion that supporters and advocates of neoliberal policies that endanger the lives of millions should be excluded from communion : “We affirm outright that anyone who performs or supports an abortion is ipso facto excluded from the Eucharist if he doesn't regret it. But is it permissible for a Christian who actually represents the ideology of neoliberalism, which puts millions of citizens in a deadly situation [...], to receive the Lord's Supper? Isn't that the 'crime of abortion' committed on the 'already born'? "
