Michael "Mike" Rodriguez (born July 14, 1979 in Queens , New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( trumpet , composition ) of modern jazz .

Rodriguez, who grew up in Miami since the age of eight, began learning classical guitar there. Encouraged by his family, he also began to play the trumpet in middle school; he studied trumpet and guitar at the New World School of Arts in Miami and then continued his trumpet studies at the University of Miami . After two years he moved to New School University in New York, where he received his Bachelor of Arts. Since then he has played in the New York jazz scene with musicians such as Clark Terry , Bobby Watson , Quincy Jones , Joe Lovano , Toshiko Akiyoshi , Chico O'Farrill , the Lincoln Center Orchestra, Jessica Simpson , the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the Carla Bley Band , Harry Connick Jr. , Eddie Palmieri , the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra, Bob Mintzer and the Liberation Music Orchestra of Charlie Haden . In late 2003, he appeared on Haden's Grammy Award winning album Land of the Sun (alongside Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Joe Lovano).

Rodriguez is co-leader of a group with his brother, the pianist Robert Rodriguez, with whom he presented four albums ( Rodriguez Brothers ); their album Impromptu was nominated for a Grammy in 2016. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1990 and 2017, including a. also with Roswell Rudd , Arturo O'Farrill , Gerald Wilson , Champian Fulton , Ryan Keberle , Conrad Herwig ( The Latin Side of Herbie Hancock ), The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band , hr-Bigband ( You're It!, with Bobby Shew ), Dafnis Prieto , Maria Schneider and Kenny Barron . As a studio musician, he also worked with Maysa, Joaquin “Joe” Claussell and David Bowie ( Nothing Has Changed , 2014). He currently (2019) leads the Mike Rodriguez Quintet , which includes John Ellis , Adam Birnbaum , Reuben Rogers and Johnathan Blake . He teaches trumpet at New York University .
