Miloš Raban (born June 20, 1948 in Údol Svatého Kryštofa ; † January 7, 2011 in Liberec ) was a Czech , Roman Catholic priest , educator , theologian and dean of the Pedagogical Faculty of the Technical University in Liberec .

Life

Raban was the eldest son of his parents' three children who worked in forestry. He graduated from high school in Jičín and studied technical systems development at the Technical University in Prague . He then married and had two children. Until 1977 he worked at the research institute for occupational safety. In the same year he had a business trip to Vienna, from which he withdrew and never returned to Czechoslovakia. During this time he found the Christian faith and decided to study theology abroad, because back then in Czechoslovakia it would not have been legally possible. In the year of his escape, he went to Italy on the recommendation of Cardinal František Tomášek . He studied theology and philosophy there, first at the Pontifical Lateran University and then obtained his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University .

For his scientific work he kept in personal contact with the psychiatrist and philosopher Viktor Frankl , whom he often visited Vienna. In 1989 Raban wrote his dissertation on the philosophy and methodology of a spiritual path to God based on Frankl's research (The spiritual dimension of Viktor E. Frankl's psychology).

On the basis of extraordinary papal permission from John Paul II , he received a dispensation that exempted him from celibacy . Raban was ordained a priest on November 9, 1985 in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome and intended for the diocese of Litoměřice . From 1985 to 1990 he was a priest in Frankfurt am Main . In 1990 he was asked by Bishop Josef Koukl to return to his native diocese. In his spare time, he climbed the Bohemian Paradise on the Prachau Rock in his homeland. He also climbed several mountains and Alpine peaks in Germany and Europe, including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc . For mountaineering he also traveled to several climbing areas all over the world, including the USA , the Philippines and Brazil .

From September 1990 until his death he worked in Raspenava and Hejnice .

Thanks to his efforts and efforts, the former Franciscan monastery in Haindorf was restored and the International Center for Spiritual Renewal, of which he was director, was opened at the beginning of 2001. Since 1995 he has been working at the Technical University in Liberec . From 2005 to 2008 he held the office of dean at the Faculty of Science, Social Sciences and Education. At the same time he taught at the University in Hradec Králové .

For many years he was chairman of the Czech Society for Catholic Theology. From 1996 to 2003 he was secretary of the plenary assembly of the Catholic Church in the Czech Republic. He was also a long-time member of the Military and Hospitable Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem . In the context of his diocese, the diocese of Leitmeritz , he worked for many years as episcopal vicar for church education and training, as a member of the priest council and the college of consultors.

After his death he was buried in the monastery church of the Visitation of Mary (Chrám Navštívení Panny Marie) in Hejnice .
