One doesn't play with love is a German love film by Hans W. Busse from 1973.

action

The adult hotel manager Lis has loved the doctor Dr. med. Peter Arco, who could theoretically be her father, who still sees her as a child and is also her brother Georg's best friend. Since Peter lives alone as a die-hard bachelor , Lis thinks of a ruse. She claims to be pregnant, but to have long since left the father of the unborn child. Georg, who wants to run for mayor in the next election , could have an illegitimate child in the family cost him his almost certain position. Lis convinces him that one of his best friends should be willing to marry her for a contractually stipulated short period of time and to divorce her after the child is born. She suggests Peter, of whom she has a portrait, with whom she secretly talks. Georg persuades Peter to marry Lis and he stands by his friend.

The marriage is concluded according to contractual rules and Lis and Peter now present themselves as a couple in public. Peter does not love Lis because his ideal woman has to be submissive, but treats her like a good friend. However, when she develops appendicitis and Peter operates on her, he realizes during the operation that she is not pregnant. He consults with Georg and decides not to say anything to Lis, because he wants to know what caused her to create the hoax. Nevertheless, he now treats her coolly and negatively and even invites his childhood sweetheart Lieselotte to the hotel, where he and Lis live in one room. Lis reacts jealously when she notices the intimacy of Lieselotte and Peter and sees Lieselotte flirting with her husband. When she misinterprets a harmless kiss goodbye as passionate love, Lis hastily travels back to Munich . On the train she meets Lieselotte, who tells her that she only wanted to test whether she, as a much older woman, still affects men. She surprisingly got engaged to Georg for Lis. Peter, in turn, convinced her that Lis truly loves him.

Lis starts working on a hotel reception in Munich. Here she also finds Peter, who has been looking for her for a long time. He promises to give up his macho behavior and accept Lis as a strong woman. She gives him the key to her hotel room and there he finally sees his photo on her bedside table, which she has always hidden from him until then and with which she has secretly communicated. He realizes that she invented pregnancy only because she loves him. When Lis comes into her hotel room, they both embrace - and Lis can finally remove the photo from her bedside table.

production

The opening scenes of the film were shot in what was then the Klosterhotel Biburg , the wedding scenes were shot in front of the Hotel Seethaler in Straubing and the honeymoon hotel was the Holiday Inn in Munich- Schwabing . The film had its world premiere on November 8, 1973.

The model was the novella Lis conquers a bachelor by Kurt Lug and Herbert Land . In terms of content, the film has nothing in common with the play Man Doesn't Play with Love ( On ne badine pas avec l'amour ) by Alfred de Musset , published in 1834 .

criticism

The film-dienst called “ With love” is not an "average comedy with an anachronistic image of women for the time it was made."

For Cinema , you don't play a "conservative joke that would have fit better in the 50s."
