history

The Mitte Museum was created in 2001 as a result of the Berlin administrative reform and emerged from the merger of the three formerly independent local museums in Mitte , Tiergarten and Wedding .

Heimatmuseum Berlin-Mitte

The institution was founded in 1987 as the “Heimatgeschichtliches Kabinett” for the 750th anniversary in what was then East Berlin's Mitte district of Berlin. This step was inspired by a “local history interest group”, which had already dealt with local history issues in the district for several years . The exhibition rooms were located on the ground floor of building no.23 on Sophienstrasse, which had been redesigned into a Handwerkergasse for the city's anniversary. After the reunification and the takeover of archive rooms in Torstrasse, the name was changed in 1992 to “Heimatmuseum Berlin-Mitte”. The museum stayed in its original location until 1997. The move to the Palais am Festungsgraben - behind the Neue Wache Unter den Linden - was again renamed “Museum Mitte von Berlin”. The museum carried this name until the district merger and the subsequent integration into the new "Mitte Museum" of the new greater district of Mitte. Until 2009, the “Mitte Museum am Festungsgraben” held thematic changing exhibitions in these rooms .

Tiergarten local history museum

Like other district museums in the former West Berlin , the Tiergarten Heimatmuseum was created on the basis of the civic engagement of a local history initiative. The “Working Group for the History of the Tiergarten eV” was founded as early as 1961 with the aim of researching and presenting the local past. A first historical collection was also created. In 1984 the “Heimatarchiv Tiergarten” was opened at Zwinglistraße 2, which three years later as the “Heimatmuseum Tiergarten” was able to use several exhibition rooms in the Brothers Grimm House, Turmstraße 75. As a result of a series of “building block exhibitions”, a permanent exhibition on the history of the district was developed, which was shown until the museum was closed in 2004.

Wedding home museum

The Wedding Heritage Museum emerged in 1989 from the former Wedding Heritage Archive. There were first plans to establish a municipal historical archive in the district as early as the 1930s. In 1951, the seven hundredth anniversary of the documentary mention of the village of Wedding was celebrated with a large city festival, accompanied by a historical exhibition. The author of the accompanying book was the teacher and local researcher Bruno Stephan. After the Wedding Home Archive - as a department of the district art office - was opened in 1952, he remained the director of this facility for 20 years. From the beginning he built up a regional history collection. After the exhibition on the history of the Wedding district in 1987, on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Berlin, the Wedding Home Archive was expanded to become a regional history museum. In 1989 it was officially opened as the “Heimatmuseum Wedding” at Pankstraße 47, the current location of the Mitte Museum. Today the Mitte Museum is located here.
