Stages and course of the race
The first stage in the north-west of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur led over undulating terrain, with the Col de Pointu even a first category mountain classification was on the agenda. Although the last kilometers were downhill and the sprinter teams were working hard in the field, the five-man breakaway group of the day managed to save three seconds at the finish line, with French champion Thomas Voeckler winning the group's sprint. The route led more and more to the southwest on the following sections. The second day only contained serious climbs in the first half, including the Col des Portes (1st category). The Frenchman Romain Feillu from Vacansoleil-DCM won the mass sprint, who was unbeatable on the following two sections, which were similar in profile - even on the steep climb to the finish in Biot - and thanks to the time bonuses he took over yellow.
The tour ended in Toulon on Mont Faron, which is traditionally a part of every Mediterranean tour and where the decision was made about overall victory. David Moncoutié from Cofidis, le Crédit en Ligne secured the yellow jersey with his solo win . It was his third career win on the Faron.
