The Mocambo passenger ship is one of the oldest passenger ships still in service in the Federal Republic of Germany.

history

Today's motor ship Mocambo was built in 1872 as a steamship Hamburg in the Reiherstieg shipyard on Steinwerder for the United Alster boatmen . It was 13.30 meters long and 4.20 meters wide. The steam engine had an output of 45 hp and the ship was approved for 150 people. In 1908 the first conversion to a smooth-decker took place without the originally low-lying cabin. This enabled the passenger capacity to be increased to 200 people. After the modernization of the steam engine, it produced 65 hp. At the same time, the ship received after the Roman goddess Latona the new name Latona . It remained in the possession of the United Alster Shipmen until 1920 . When it was renamed to Barmbeck , Hamburger Hochbahn AG took over the ship in the same year and operated it until 1939. In that year it went to Lübeck Stadtwerke under the new name Vorwerk and after a major overhaul it was back on the road. From 1945 the Trave-Transport-Gesellschaft Ahrens & Co. is named as the owner . In 1946 it was converted into a motor ship and sold to Wilhelm Zolchow in Berlin in 1952 . It was named Obermaat . 1953 at accepts Teltowkanal based Teltow shipyard the ship, where it was rebuilt in 1954 and modernized in order to meet the requirements of the new owner. The cost of the renovation was out of proportion to the purchase price, so that a new building can almost be assumed. The bow and stern are being lengthened and the superstructures and technical facilities are being renewed. The ship will be 23.65 meters long and 5.15 meters wide. The new diesel engine has an output of 75 hp.

When it left the shipyard, it was given the name Neukölln and went into operation for Stern und Kreisschiffahrt , for which it remained on the then West Berlin waters until 1977 . At the turn of the year 1977/78 it was sold and the company Schiffs-Schillow , based in Berlin-Charlottenburg , continued the voyages with the ship, now renamed Tarzan . In November 1978 it went from the Spree and Havel to the small Elbe tributary , the Oste, to the new owners in Achthöfen , the operators of the Hotel Seefahrer . From them the ship was named Mocambo . Modifications were made again and the drive system was replaced by a motor with 105 hp. In 1993 the Mocambo went to the Oste shipping company of the Landsmann family. In 1998 the family company sold the ship to Ribnitz-Damgarten on the Baltic Sea. The new operator was Sea-Tour GmbH Rostock. In the period from 1999 to 2001 the ship was decommissioned and threatened to go into neglect. At the end of 2001, new owners were found who subjected it to two major overhauls in a Polish shipyard. The ship is back on the Oste River under the name Mocambo . The Mocambo is now 141 years old (as of 2013) and is one of the oldest passenger ships still in service in the Federal Republic of Germany.
