Monclassico ( Solander : Monclàsech ; German outdated: St. Vigil or Munglassich ) is a fraction of the municipality ( comune ) Dimaro Folgarida and was an independent municipality in Trentino in the Trentino-South Tyrol region until 2015 . The western fraction Presson belonged to the municipality of Monclassico. The neighboring communities were Cles , Croviana , Dimaro and Malè .
geography
Monclassico is located about 34 kilometers north-north-west of Trento on the orographic left side of the valley in Val di Sole at an altitude of 782 mslm. South of the town center, the Noce flows past. The place borders on the northern edge of the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park and forms the upper geographical limit up to which commercial fruit-growing , especially apples , is carried out in Val di Sole.
history
The area around Monclassico was already settled in the Iron Age, as evidence shows. In the 13th century, the place was the administrative seat of one of the two seats established by the Prince-Bishop of Trento in Val di Sole . In 1622 Monclassico was completely destroyed in a fire. The baroque parish church consecrated to Saint Vigilius was built at the end of the 18th century. There is evidence of a previous building already in existence in 1240.
In 2003, the Monclassico station on the Trient-Malè-Mezzana narrow-gauge railway was opened. On January 1, 2016, Monclassico merged with the municipality of Dimaro to form the new municipality of Dimaro Folgarida.
traffic
In addition to the narrow-gauge railway, the Strada Statale 42 del Tonale e della Mendola from Treviglio to Bozen runs through the former municipal area .
Others
Monclassico is known for the numerous sundials that adorn many of the town's house facades. Since 2002, several new sundials have been created every year in July by national and international artists.
