action

Alex wants to draw a line under her previous life after a stay in prison. She looks for a new job and moves into her late grandmother's house. When she comes home from her first day at work, she discovers an intruder. Tom hangs around her house. Shortly afterwards she made the acquaintance of Tom's father Piet. He feels drawn to Alex and wants to see her again. But she refuses any appointments. However, father and son are not so easy to get rid of and keep appearing near them. Alex is persuaded to have dinner with the small family and even comes to Piet's birthday. But he fell in love with Alex, which she doesn't reply. When Tom sets his father's car on fire out of anger, their problems become apparent. Piet reacts violently. After another attack, Piet doesn't know what to do other than to put Tom in a foster family.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews, with particular emphasis on the depth of the film despite the simple subject. For example, the Bayerischer Rundfunk : “The exquisitely performing ensemble Juliane Köhler, in great emotional and only slowly thawing rigidity and Axel Prahl in rumbling happiness, while daring balancing along the painful depths of everyday life through complexity and a perfectly complementary performance, ensure that the gravity of the topic does not weigh down and despite all the bulkiness the interest in the development of the characters does not wane. ”The lexicon of international film certifies the film as“ a quiet, intense drama with excellently played, believably developed characters. The tension resulting from looks and gestures does not suffer from the somewhat symbolic handling of individual motifs. "

In addition to the affirmative reviews, the film's impenetrability is particularly criticized. The Berliner Zeitung commented : "[...] that's how the characters move in their lives encapsulated, the film itself sometimes seems so impenetrable." Due to a lack of information about the characters' past, "the viewer doesn't get close enough to the characters". Bayerischer Rundfunk also attests to the film “some inconsistencies”, but at the same time sees added value: “ Mondkalb is a film of uncertainties and imponderables, [and] in its ambiguity does not serve any ready-made solutions. That doesn't make it easy to consume, but it is psychologically exciting. "

Awards

The Wiesbaden Film Evaluation Center awarded the film the rating of “Particularly valuable” because “one of these delicately precise, German feature films has succeeded”, “which asserts itself against sensational topics and productions that are aimed at international markets and the qualities of local themes and narrative styles flourish leaves". In addition, the FBW report certified the work with “brilliant craftsmanship, realistic dialogues and convincing actor management”.
