Monika Muskała (* 1966 in Kłodzko , Poland ) is a Polish author and translator from German.

Life

In 1989 she completed German studies at the University of Breslau and then worked as a research assistant at the chair for German-language literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. She has lived in Austria since 1993 .

She translates German-language playwrights for Polish publishers and theaters, including Elfriede Jelinek Thomas Bernhard , Werner Schwab , Heiner Müller , Ödön von Horváth and Frank Wedekind . Her essays and interviews have appeared in Polish theater and literary magazines . In the late 1990s she worked as a foreign correspondent for the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza and for the Polish section of the BBC . In 2004 she gave a lecture on Werner Schwab's language at the Vienna Lectures . In the same year she was a juror at the Stückemarkt ( Berlin Theatertreffen ). As a translator and dramaturge, she worked with directors such as Krystian Lupa , Mariusz Trelinski , Jan Klata and Michał Borczuch .

For her book “Między Placem Bohaterów a Rechnitz . Austriackie rozliczenia ”(Between Heldenplatz and Rechnitz . Austrian accounts, Krakow, 2016), which deals with the confrontation of Austrian artists and writers with the Nazi era, she was nominated for Nike (Literature Prize) and Gdynia Literature Prize and in 2017 she received the EUR 10,000 prize JULIUSZ Prize.

With her sister, the Polish actress Gabriela Muskała , she writes plays under the pseudonym Amanita Muskaria . Her first piece The Journey to Buenos Aires. Work in Regress has received international awards. This monologue by a woman suffering from Alzheimer's was premiered in Germany in 2012 at the Theater im Palais in Berlin . Her second play Daily Soup premiered in 2007 at the National Theater in Warsaw . When it was broadcast live on Polish television in 2012, the play had 1 million viewers. The duo teach improvisation at the Lodz Film School .

As an author, Monika Muskała took part in two book projects by the Austrian photographer and filmmaker Andreas Horvath : Yakutia - Siberia of Siberia and Heartlands - Sketches of Rural America . Joint projects also include the documentaries The Passion According to the Polish Community of Pruchnik and Views of a Retired Night Porter , which won first prize at the 2006 Karlovy Vary Film Festival . Their joint documentary Arab Attraction premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in 2010.
