Fictional biography

Monkey D. Luffy was born the son of the revolutionary Monkey D. Dragon and the grandson of the Navy Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp in Windmillendorf, Eastblue .

Impressed by the pirate "Red Hair" Shanks - at the same time his great role model - he already had the big dream of becoming the "King of the Pirates" as a little boy. When he accidentally ate the "gum-gum devil fruit" while on one of Shanks' shore excursions in Luffy's home , he became a rubber person, which allows him to overstretch his entire body but lose the ability to swim. Shanks sacrifices his left arm to save Luffy from a sea monster. He trusts Luffy and when he leaves he gives him his straw hat, which will be Luffy's most valuable possession and trademark, which is also reflected in his nickname Straw Hat Luffy. Later he was placed by Garp in the care of Dadan , the leader of a small gang of mountain bandits, and he met Ace and later Sabo . Luffy tried very hard to be friends and finally the three agreed on an inseparable brotherhood.

At the age of 17 Luffy finally set out to find people for his endeavor to become the world's greatest treasure, the One Piece , to become the pirate king and to go on an adventure with the pirates on the oceans.

His current bounty is 1.5 billion berries.

character

Luffy's goal is to become the pirate king. For him it is not about ruling the oceans, but about the fact that the pirate king is the person with the most freedom. He attaches great importance to achieving his goal alone with the help of his friends. He even refuses to get any information about the One Piece from Rayleigh, not even whether it really exists. He would also accept it if he were to die in the realization of his dream.

Luffy usually appears very lively and carefree, even if he has attempted an execution he will smile seconds before he dies. However, this can change very quickly, for example if his crew or friends are in danger. In such cases, Luffy is very ambitious and without hesitation stands in the way of overpowering enemies. He also gets extremely angry if someone damages his straw hat, as it is only a loan from his great idol, the red Shank, for Luffy. In order to save Nico Robin, he is even ready to declare war on the entire world. While he may otherwise appear unintelligent, he is very resourceful in such fights. He often finds weak points in opponents or takes advantage of the existing circumstances to defeat his opponents. However, Luffy does not kill an opponent, because in One Piece everyone lives for their dreams and beliefs. With the victory, Luffy destroys these dreams, which is just as bad for the vanquished as death.

A special character trait is his enormous strength of will, with which he repeatedly manages to attract others to his side. Most of his crew members did not want to join him at first either, but were turned down by Luffy's persistence. He does not see his colleagues as subordinates, but as friends.

Luffy has a huge appetite (especially for meat) and can eat enormous amounts, especially after strenuous fights. Together with plenty of sleep, this is also enough for him to recover from the worst of injuries.

He is very easy to inspire. He wants strange-looking characters in his team immediately, without knowing about their abilities. For example, he invites Chopper, a talking reindeer, without knowing that he is a doctor.

Luffy is often compared to this by people who knew Gol D. Roger. According to Rayleigh, the young Luffy Shanks was very reminiscent of the pirate king. He also wore the straw hat when he first met Rayleigh. On Fishman Island, it is implied that Luffy, like Gol D. Roger, has the ability to hear the voice of all things . Both also have the "D." in their name.

Skills

By consuming the gum-gum fruit (in Japanese called Gomu Gomu no Mi), a devil fruit, Luffy gains the ability to stretch like rubber. This makes it easier for him to take hits and lets bullets ricochet off him. In return, he can no longer swim, since water has a paralyzing effect on all devil fruit users and also prevents the use of his devil's powers. After breaking out of Impel Down, he also has increased immunity to poisons of all kinds.

Luffy's attacks mostly consist of punches or kicks, which he can improve and vary with his new skills. During an encounter with Admiral Kuzan, however, Luffy realizes that despite his adventures and new attacks, he is still too weak to defend his crew. That is why he develops new techniques with which he can temporarily become stronger. He calls these techniques gear.

Gear 2

Gear 2 is a technique where Luffy's elasticity makes the blood in his body pump faster. This makes Luffy extremely fast and his attacks and movements become much faster and stronger. His body temperature rises sharply, which is why his skin turns reddish and steam escapes from his body.

Gear 3

In this technique, Luffy bites his thumb and inflates his bones with air. He can then distribute the air in his bones to a region of the body, which enlarges it enormously. This makes his attacks stronger and can be used over a larger area. Prior to his two-year training, it temporarily shrank to a miniature version of its normal size for the same amount of time he used the technique. Later in the story, he can now use Gear 3 without this disadvantage.

Haki

After a two-year time jump in the plot, Luffy has mastered the three different types of haki , namely armor ( busoushoku) , observation ( kenbunshoku) and king shaki (haoushoku).

Gear 4

Gear 4 is a technique where Luffy pumps air into his muscles, causing him to puff up. In addition, he covers most of his upper body and arms with Haki, which is elastic like rubber despite this. Luffy is very fast and elastic in this state, but still has an enormous destructive power and robustness due to the Haki.
